Roller skating has experienced a resurgence in popularity in recent years, attracting people of all ages and backgrounds. In this blog post, we have the pleasure of interviewing Sara, one of the coaches at Roller Pump & South Side Girls. Sara shares her passion for roller skating, and why she dedicates herself to training roller skaters. Let’s dive into the world of roller skating through Sara’s perspective.
What is the backstory on your skate name?
Oh man! This is a loaded question. Ultimately, it’s a pun faced towards my general optimistic view of failure and the human condition. Plus it’s hilarious to hear “Sara Problem at the end of the rink
What do you do when you are not training the peeps to rollerskate?
Whatever I want. Mainly skate……I’m a professional hand holder! Meaning; I sell real estate (#sellonwheels) and help create, scale and sell small businesses. sarasells.homes I also work on scaling my little laundry company and I have this book I wrote. DriFold.com and I’m blessed with two amazing offspring and a whole husband I try to hang out with whenever possible. Sometimes I take my cat skating.
When and why did you start rollerskating?
I was a cute three-year-old and my mom’s best guy friend taught me so he could catch babes at the local rink. No clue if it worked.
Has your why changed over the years?
Yes and no. At the core of my desire to skate is just that. The love of how it makes me feel. There’s a freedom in gliding around and pride in execution. You’ve heard of runners high? Skaters high is better.
My “Southside/Roller Pump Why” has evolved over the years from wanting to be a badass roller babe (and realizing that I don’t like being touched), to wanting to help women fall in love with themselves. It’s the most amazing thing to watch these scared little baby birds completely transform into these BEASTS of beautiful women.
I’m also a little in love with the community itself and I’ve stuck my nose so far in the back end growth of the organization itself that I’m fully invested.
Basically I have drank the roller skating Kool aid and there’s no going back.
Advice to new skaters on the fence
1.) IT’S ALL IN YOUR HEAD. Yes, you can. Everything you’re telling yourself is an excuse. You’re not too old, too fat, too clumsy… You’re too scared. Come see me, I’ll brainwash you into believing in yourself.
2.) Wear your gear!! Gear stays on, noggin stays safe. And you look just as cute in your helmet.
3.) Tighten your core. Learn the proper way to tighten your core and do it whenever you think about it. It will totally change your stability and help you build muscle, confidence, and more skating skills.
Bonus advice: Find a group of people who make you want to do better and stick with them. (It’s us… We’re the people.)
