Why I Derby! Ramona Plower

What is the backstory on your Derby Name?

A lot of people actually miss the reference when it comes to my name. Ramona Plower is a nod to Ramona Flowers from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. When my husband and I met I didn’t have cable or internet so we would be stuck watching movies that I owned. Scott Pilgrim was basically on repeat for about a year. When I thought of it it was kind of an “ah ha!” moment.

What do you do when you are not doing the derby?

Outside of derby I spend most of my time being a mom. I’ve got two kids (9 and 2) that I’ve had the privilege of being home with. I am also a doula, which is kind of like a coach for birthing mamas. I help them come up with a birth plan, cope with the pains of birth, give evidence based information, and really just be the physical and emotional support that the mom can rely on.

When did you start roller derby?

I started derby in February 2018, so I’m just shy of a whole year.

Why did you start derby?

Being a stay at home mom for the most part can really take a toll on you both mentally and physically. Don’t get me wrong, it’s been so fun and such a privilege BUT I was out of shape and kind of lost myself. You throw every bit energy into your kids and you feel like you just become “mom” and loose who you were before that. I decided I desperately needed a hobby. Something that was just for me. That’s when I found South Side! I sent the link to my best friend (and now derby wife) and said let’s do this! One of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Has your why changed?

Not at all. I’m in the best physical shape I’ve been in since having my son (bye bye baby weight!) and it’s something I can do for me. It’s my stress reliever. I know when I show up to practice I’ll be sweating, laughing, and growing as a person and skater.

Advice to new skaters!

Go at your own pace. Our league has some amazing talent and it’s so easy to try and compare yourself. Don’t!! Just show up to practice, work you ass off, and you’ll get there. I’m still not there and that’s ok. Also, FALL SMALL lol
