Banked Track 101

Getting On, Staying Safe & Getting Rolling 🛼⚡

If you get here early and none of us are on the track yet, follow these steps to get yourself set up like a pro!

💧 🧗‍♀️ Step 1: Free Your Hands & Toss Your Water

  • Grab your water bottle—you are definitely going to need it! You’ll get thirsty fast, and there are benches in the center to rest.
  • Keep your hands 100% free! You’ll need both hands to safely hoist yourself onto the track structure (until you’re an expert, lol).
  • Make sure your water bottle has a tight, leak-proof cap and roll or toss it into the center infield before climbing up. If you have a fanny pack, wear that so your hands stay completely open.

🏁 🛼 Step 2: Get Onto the Track Structure

  • Walk over to the lowest part of the banked track.
  • Use both hands to climb or crawl up onto the track edge at that low spot.
  • Once you’re up, drop down and slide down on your kneepads into the flat inside area (the infield).

⚡ 🔄 Step 3: Get Moving on the Flat

  • Stand up inside the flat apron area.
  • Start skating counter-clockwise on the flat surface to build up a comfortable speed and momentum.

🛡️ ⚠️ Step 4: Practice Stepping Off & Dropping Low (Safety Drill)

  • While cruising on the flat, place one foot up onto the banked surface while keeping your other foot on the flat.
  • Now practice stepping off: First, pull that top foot back down so BOTH feet are fully flat on the inside apron.
  • CRITICAL SAFETY RULE:
  • Do NOT try to fall or drop to your knees while one foot is still up on the steep bank! Step completely off with both feet on the flat first, and then immediately drop into a single-knee or double-knee slide.
  • Why we do this: The slope wants to pull you backward if you stand upright, but trying to fall while split between two levels can twist your body. Step off completely, get low, and trust your pads on the flat surface!

🔥 🤘 Step 5: Roll on the Bank with Both Feet

  • Once stepping all the way off into a controlled knee slide feels natural, ease back into a glide.
  • Put one foot up on the bank, then bring your second foot up to join it.
  • Bend those knees, stay low, and enjoy the ride! Whenever you need a breather, just roll into the center, grab a seat on the benches, and hydrate.
Keep your hands free • Step off before you slide • Trust your pads & Have fun! 🖤⚡
