Roller Derby Travel Team Readiness Program Starting
Aug 7th Last 30 Mins of Wednesday Practice
Do you dream of competing at a national level in roller derby or just need an extra training boost to optimize your current skills to maintain your derby shelf life? Our 8-week "Ready to Roll" program is crafted specifically to prepare dedicated skaters like you for our national travel team!
Your Path to Tryouts
This program is designed for skaters who are eager to commit and enhance their skills. By successfully completing the eight-week course, you will be fully prepared to try out for our national team, provided your schedule permits. If that's not possible, you'll still emerge as a stronger skater, extending your roller derby life while significantly reducing the risk of injuries during gameplay.
Here's how it works:
-
8 Weeks to Excellence: This intensive program will enhance your skills, endurance, and strategic understanding to meet national-level standards.
-
Skills & Attendance Pave the Way: Throughout the program, we'll monitor your attendance and evaluate your skill progression.
-
Tryout Eligibility: Consistently passing our attendance and skills tests will earn you a spot on our tryout eligibility list!
-
Maintain Your Edge: After completing the program, all you need to do is maintain your skills. We'll schedule tryouts and form our travel team once we have 20 skaters who meet all the requirements to build a competitive national-level team.
To achieve our goal of forming a cohesive and competitive travel team, reaching a membership of 20 dedicated skaters is essential. At South Side Roller Derby, we are committed to assembling a team of skaters who are dedicated to practicing together and fostering a strong sense of team unity. This is not a pickup team; we are focused on creating one of the strongest teams in the nation.
-
Our team benefits from the guidance of some of the most experienced trainers and referees within the World Skate derby community. We adhere to the World Skate Roller Derby rules, which are recognized by the International Olympic Committee. We are passionate about championing this rule set as part of our ongoing effort to see roller derby included in the Olympics one day.
-
We understand the allure of travel teams, but we're not interested in building just any team. Many leagues offer the chance to travel, but their focus isn't always on competitive excellence. We're committed to building a winning team, not a losing one. Our program is designed to develop athletes who can truly compete at a national level. If you're looking for the opportunity to travel and win, with a dedicated team focused on strategic growth and success, you belong with us.
What We're Looking For: Your Commitment to Excellence
Joining our travel team means embracing a higher level of training and dedication. We're seeking skaters who are ready to push their limits and consistently strive for improvement.
-
Foundational Skills: To enter the "Ready to Roll" program, you'll need to pass the South Side Roller Derby Level 3 skills assessment.
-
Full Practice Participation: Dedicated "Ready to Roll" training takes place during the last 30 minutes of Wednesday practices, but we expect you to attend the entire practice session, starting at 7:00 PM. This helps us gauge your endurance and ensures you're ready for rigorous training. You should be able to skate for two hours, with short water breaks. Consistent attendance at all practices is crucial for tryout eligibility.
-
Post-Game Dedication: National-level tournaments span multiple days and require sustained performance. Your attendance at practices the week after a game, especially on Monday and Wednesday, is vital. It demonstrates to coaches and your team that you have the stamina and ability to play derby over multiple days.
-
Team Loyalty: Being part of our travel team means committing fully to our shared goals. We require full dedication to South Side Roller Derby's travel team. Skating with other travel teams in the area can undermine team cohesion. This program is for those committed to our team's journey.
-
Trainable & Respectful: To succeed at a national level, you must be open to coaching and feedback. Your coaches are dedicated to your development, and their expertise requires your full attention and respect.
-
Crucial Communication: We understand that life happens. If you need to miss a practice or class, you must contact your coaches in advance. This allows us to adjust training plans and shows your continued commitment.
The "Ready to Roll" program is an investment in your potential. We'll work with you to develop your strengths and address your weaknesses, but your willingness to learn and adapt is paramount!
