South Side Roller Derby Travel Team Tryouts

Hey South Side Ninjas / Black Level / Level 4 Skaters! It's time to get gritty! South Side Roller Derby is excited to kick off our travel team tryouts,

Women's National Level Team

As a member of our National Level Team, you'll have the chance to:

  • Participate in National Level Roller Derby Practices
  • Play in both Flat & Banked Track Games
  • Learn and apply World Skate/USA Roller Sports Rules recognized by the International Olympic Committee
  • Tryout for our prestigious Travel Team!

Before you sign up, please consider the following commitments:

  • Travel Team requires a 4-month commitment from March - July 
    You will be practicing 3 days a week for 4 months.. Let that sink in before you commit. 
  • You must be willing to travel and cover the costs of travel. We will have 2-3 Travel Team Games A Season
  • Commitment to SSRD Off Skate program 2 days a week. This team workout will be completed virtually each week with check-ins and accountability. Let that sink in too. 2 days a week Tuesday and Friday you are going to do a 45 min at home strength and mobility training session.
  • Commitment to 3 on-skate practices with the team 3 days a week (Mon, Wed, Thurs). Let that sink in.
  • Purchase USA Roller Sports Membership Insurance $90 (SSRD Club Charter Number is TX117RD)

If you can handle all that for 4 months, we'd love to have you join our tryouts in April 2026. For members only.

Skills Assessment

You must pass a rigorous footwork skills assessment and a written rules test before tryouts to ensure understanding of the game's strategy and rules. Here are the skills you'll need to master:

  • 21 cone touches - sticky feet
  • 21 cone touches - grapevines
  • 25  - plow stops
  • 21 - Front Skater Pushes
  • 21- Back Skater Pushes
  • 25 cone touches - turnaround toe stop
  • 5 Laps 2Falls - 45 Seconds
  • 5 Lap Fast Backwards 60 Seconds
  • 50 squat jumps
  • 20 180s
  • 6 Mohawks (hold landing for 6 seconds)
  • 6 Waltz jumps (hold landing for 6 seconds)
  • 25 bunny hops on each leg
